The Müllerthal Trail, located in the heart of Luxembourg, is one of the most iconic hiking trails in Europe. This trail takes you through a beautiful landscape of dense forests, impressive rock formations, waterfalls and picturesque villages. Do you want to know all about the Müllerthal Trail? How you can combine it with packrafting? And why this area is perfect for both beginners and advanced packrafters. Then read on quickly!
What is the Müllerthal Trail?
The Müllerthal Trail is a hiking trail about 112 kilometers long, divided into three major loops (Route 1, Route 2 and Route 3), but is often walked in 6 stages. The trail winds through the heart of the Müllerthal, a region nicknamed “Little Switzerland” because of its rugged rock formations and deep gorges. Despite the name, you don’t have to climb mountains like in the real Alps, but the hilly landscape with its spectacular rocks and dense forests offers plenty of challenge for both novice and experienced hikers.

Müllerthal Trail Route 1 - 37 km
Echternach (Basilica) – Rosport – Moersdorf – Herborn)
Route 1 of the Müllerthal Trail is about 37 kilometers long and is best known for the beautiful valleys you walk through. This route starts in Echternach, Luxembourg’s oldest town, and takes you through a landscape of rolling hills, green meadows and dense forests. Along the way, you’ll pass small rivers like the Sûre (Sauer) and the Black Ernz, which will make your hike extra relaxing.
One of the highlights of Route 1 is the Wolfsschlucht, a narrow gorge carved by water and surrounded by towering rock walls. This section of the trail is adventurous and really makes you feel like you’re trekking through untouched nature. Along the way, you’ll pass idyllic spots where you can pause for a picnic or simply enjoy the babbling water.

Müllerthal Trail Route 2 - 38 km
Echternach (Basilica) – Berdorf – Mullerthal – Hersberg – Scheidgen
Are you looking for the rugged, rocky landscape that the Müllerthal is so famous for? Then Route 2 is perfect. This 38 kilometer route leads you through the most spectacular parts of Little Switzerland. Think impressive rock formations, narrow gorges and bizarre stone formations through which you will hike your way.
One of the highlights on Route 2 is the famous Hohllay Cave. This cave was carved by human hands and used to make millstones. It is a special place of great historical value, where you can still see traces of the old crafts in the walls of the cave. Near the Hohllay is the Berdorf Amphitheater, where you can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
The trail further takes you through impressive gorges such as the Kuelscheier and the Rittergang, where you walk through narrow passages and between giant rocks. The trail is challenging, but the views and extraordinary rock formations make every step worthwhile.

Müllerthal Trail Route 3 - 38 km
Mullerthal – Blumenthal – Larochette – Beaufort
Route 3 of the Müllerthal Trail is perhaps the most varied of the three. This 38-kilometer route combines the best of what the Müllerthal has to offer: forests, rock formations and water. Along this route you will encounter some of the region’s most iconic sights, such as the Schiessentümpel waterfall.
The Schiessentümpel is without a doubt one of the most photographed spots in Luxembourg. Cascading down over three rocks, this waterfall has a charming little stone bridge that gives it a fairytale feel. It is the perfect place to take a break and enjoy the peace and beauty of nature.
Route 3 also takes you past the impressive Kallektuffquell, a spring where calcareous water flows over a bed of moss and has created a unique tuff formation. This is a quiet, lesser-known spot, perfect for taking a breather during your hike.
Why the Müllerthal Trail is perfect for packrafters
Although the Müllerthal Trail itself is a hiking trail, it is located in a region through which rivers such as the Sûre and the Ernz Blanche flow. These rivers are ideal for packrafting. The beauty of packrafting is that it can be perfectly combined with hiking. For example, you can hike part of the Müllerthal Trail and then continue your trip while paddling. The gentle flow of the Sûre makes the area suitable for beginners, while more advanced packrafters can enjoy the more challenging sections of the Ernz Blanche.
